Ayia Napa

The resort town of Ayia Napa in the southeastern corner of Cyprus island is well known for its calm sandy beaches as well as its reputation as both family holiday and pleasure party paradise in the evenings, similar to the reputation of Spanish Ibiza.

The town lies near Cape Greco to the south of Famagusta, forming part of a larger area on the island called Kokkinochoria, name after the deep red colour of its soil. Cape Greco is a 15 minute drive from the centre of Ayia Napa, and is considered the most beatiful place on the island.

In homage to the city’s Mediterranean roots, the town is named in Greek for Saint Napa, the city’s patron saint. In the center of the town the saint is venerated with a monastary of Venetian period architecture.
Since the 1980’s, the Agia Napa Festival has been established as an annual event occuring at the Seferis Sqaure, Agia Napa Monastery. Every September the area comes alive with celeberations that reflect the historic, cultural and agricultural traditions of Agia Napa with performances, opera, and Cyrpiot fold dancing.
Other than during the festival season, the Square central to the town, is filled with restaurants, nightclubs and shops, and for many is seen as the focal point of the Agia Napa night-life. UK’s Garage music scene are most attracted by the DJ’s who spin in its city square in the summers.

Most visitors to Agia Napa are there for its golden sandy beaches and pristine waters where there are many adventurous souls water-skiing, scuba-diving, speed boating, wind-surfing, as well as more laid-back visitors who swim, canoe and tan themselves by the shore. All beaches in Agia Napa have been awarded with the EU blue flag for their level of cleanliness and the comprehensive facilities offered in line with the uniform standards set by the European Union.
