Limassol

Located at the southern foothills of the Troodos Mountains, the seascape of Limassol city in Cyprus is a truly colorful place of revelry and adventure that few locations can match.

Visitors eagerly await March’s sunny climes, as the annual Limassol Carnival bathes the city in new light of enjoyment. Every September the scenic Limassol district comes to life with its annual Wine Festival, as celebrated by many wine producing villages dotted along the coastal area.

A must-see in the city is the gorgeous medieval castle, only one of the the nine castles existing in the country. Formerly used as a prison, the castle today is a medieval musuem where various cannons, tombstones, paintings and wood carvings from the 17th and 18th Centuries.

Built by the Byzantines around 1000 AD, the chapel of the castle was where Richard the Lionheart was supposed to have married his fiancee the Princess Berengaria of Navarre as she accompanied him on the Crusades to the Holy Land.

The Archaeological Museum brings to life the pre-historic era in Limassol, with discoveries of stone axes from the Neolithic period, Roman terracotta pottery, jewelry, coins and marble statues.
A quick drive down to the site of Kourion brings to life these antiquities in the ruins of the House of Achilles, and the Altar of Appollo and spectacular views of the Curium Beach. A wooden promenade along the sea opposite the kingdom of Amathus offers a great place for an evening walk.

There is also a collection of folk art of the Cypriots that showcase the city’s cultural heritage via the Folk Art Museum, preserving over two centuries of national identity. Esablished in the mid 1980’s, the museum has over 500 exhibits on display ranging from national costumes, tapestry, embroidery, wooden chests, tools, etc. This museum was awarded the Europa Nostra prize in 1989.

Those wanting to unwind in more modern settings will enjoy Galatex, in the tourist area of the city. There are plenty of entertainment andc culture in the city streets—in the pubs, night clubs and cafes on the street and in the surrounding area.
